I’ve often taken work for granted.  When I had a demanding 9 to 5 job I would often sit back and day dream about what it would be like to NOT have to work.  That was around 6 months ago.  Fast forward to today and guess what…

I’ve started working on building all sorts of passive income streams and don’t really have to work much these days.  Now of course I’m not making enough money to live on my own.  I’m currently living with my parents.  However other than paying rent I’m making enough money to cover all my other expenses.  Best of all I don’t really have to work to keep generating my current level of income.  As a matter of fact I only have to put in 2-3 hours of work each week to preserve my current income.

This is good and bad.  It’s good because I have more free time to do what I want.  Yet at the same time I’ve found myself kind of slacking the past few weeks.  I mean if you were in my shoes you’d understand or maybe i’m just pretty lazy :) But see when you don’t have a boss checking in on you, and aren’t broke you have to get yourself to work hard, which is a lot harder than it sounds.

Believe it or not.  I love what I do now.  Most of my income comes from services or products that help people improve their lives.  I certainly enjoy doing that much more than my boring 9 to 5 jobs where I was a desk zombie – kinda of like those guys in office space.  If you have a 9 to 5 job hopefully it’s more exciting than the office space career path to zombyville.

As You can probably tell, I still have a lot of aggression toward 9 to 5 jobs that I need to get out :)   Anyways Kind of went off on a tangent there.  Deep Breath.  Focus.  Okay so I’ve noticed a dangerous pattern with me lately.  I’m NOT having any kind of fun.

All the things I used to love doing are starting to seem dull and boring.  At first I thought that I just need to try out some new activities.  But I WAS WRONG.  And then it hit me like cold ice water falling out of a bucket:

All Fun and No Work is No Fun at All

In the past with my 9 to 5 schedule and working 10-12 hour days, anything other than work was lots of fun.  Weekends were awesome, I looked forward to Fridays and Saturday.  Now everyday for me feels like a weekend.  I no longer get that excitement.  So what’s the solution…

For the next couple of weeks I decided to set work hours for myself where I’ll work 5-6 hours daily no matter what.  This way I can enjoy the nights and weekends more instead of taking them for granted.

And if you think your life is too busy, that might be a blessing in decide.  I mean think about it, it’s all those boring activities like work, family and other crap you gotta do that make your free time really special.  Being busy helps you make the best of your free time, it makes you look forward to the weekend or to that night out with the guys (or gals).

In fact I’m starting to discover why hard work is a worthy value.  I’ve always wondered about those guys who become Internet billionaires overnight.  Like those guys who sold youtube to google.  There was always a question on my mind…

Why the hack didn’t those guys just retire for the rest of their lives and not work another day?  They certainly had more than enough money to do it…

I now realize that without work, it’s really hard to have fun.  I guess it’s kind of sick, but in order for us not to take our free time for granted we need “busy” time, or time where we gotta do all kinds of crap we don’t really enjoy.

Additionally without some kind of work it’s hard for someone to have purpose.  I mean think about it, no matter what you purpose is in life it often requires work.  And it’s work, and constant growth that results in happiness and feelings of well being.
